Real Skills for Real Life - What even IS #LifeSkillsNow?
You might already know Katie as the founder of Kids Cook Real Food, one of our favorite programs for helping kids feel capable in the kitchen. But a few years ago, Katie noticed something: parents kept saying they wanted more than cooking. They wanted help raising independent kids — the kind who could make decisions, take initiative, and trust themselves.
So Katie did what she always does — she listened. And she created #LifeSkillsNow, a free, virtual summer camp that gives kids exactly what so many of us wish we’d learned earlier: practical, confidence-building life skills.
#LifeSkillsNow is designed for kids and teens ages 5–18, with short daily video workshops taught by engaging, kid-friendly experts. Topics include things like:
How to cook a basic meal
How to check the oil in the car
How to budget and manage money
How to grow something (even if it’s just herbs on the windowsill)
How to handle big emotions and talk about mental health
But the best part? These aren’t just watch-and-forget lessons. After each workshop, kids are given a “mission” — a simple challenge that gets them off the screen and into real life. They might whip up a snack, interview a grandparent, or plant a seed. As Katie puts it, “We use the screen to get kids OFF the screen, as quickly as possible.”
Built for Busy Families
We know summer can be a little chaotic (hello, weeklong camp drop-offs and road trip packing lists). That’s why we love how low-pressure and flexible this camp is. You can join from anywhere, complete lessons on your own schedule, and let your kids work at their own pace. And yes — it’s totally free for one week (June 9–13), with no strings attached. If you love it, there’s an option to purchase year-round access or mini-series bundles for deeper dives later.
Plus, there are prizes. As in: over $10,000 in giveaways to kids who complete their daily “missions.” But really, the biggest prize is what Katie calls “authentic confidence” — the kind that comes from mastering real skills and knowing you’re capable.
Why This Matters
In our interview, Katie shared something we haven’t stopped thinking about:
“Confidence doesn’t come from being told you’re great. It comes from doing real things — things that matter — and seeing the results.”
And that’s exactly what #LifeSkillsNow offers. Real things. That matter. And make kids feel like they matter, too.
Whether your kids discover a new passion or just learn to make lunch without asking for help, they’ll walk away with something meaningful. And you know what? We learned things, too. Seriously.
Want In?
When you register, you’ll get early access to bonus workshops right away. You can even get a sneak peek at topics like kitchen safety, beginner money smarts, and basic car care. It’s a great way to get your kids trying new things — and maybe even buy yourself a few guilt-free minutes of quiet while they’re learning.
We’ll be cheering you on from our own messy kitchens — and maybe even joining in a few missions ourselves.
