Mother's Day Celebration: Extending the Love All Week Long 💖🌷
This week at One Potato, you'll be seeing some of our family favorite recipes to treat your mom + a special gift
Hello One Potato Family!
Even though we’re a few days early, we want to wish you all a happy Mother’s Day. We know that a mother’s job is never done, and we wanted to honor our moms all week long and not just on one day.
Sharing more about what we are cooking and thinking is one of the things we love about this new platform -- more ways to connect, learn and share. Are you familiar with the history of Mother’s Day? Here are some interesting facts to share with your family this week
1905: Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, mourns the passing of her mother and desires to organize a national holiday, “as a memorial day to honor mothers who had passed away and acknowledge the sacrifices mothers endure for their children.”
May 10, 1908: The first official Mother’s Day is celebrated in the U.S.
1914: President Woodrow Wilson announces the first national celebration of Mother’s Day - it is declared a national holiday.
In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday and holds a more religious history: it’s historically when individuals who had moved away from home and family were allowed to return to their ‘mother’ church to worship, visit their home, and their mothers.
Mother’s Day is the third-highest selling holiday for flowers (U.S.).
Mother’s Day has become so much more than just honoring mothers we’ve lost; here at One Potato, we’re celebrating mother’s and everything they do for us 24 / 7 / 365.
We’d love to hear from you about that special mom or mother figure in your life - you can leave us a comment at the end of this post on Substack or on our Instagram.
Do you have a special Mother’s Day tradition or meal that you share together? We’d love to hear about that, too.
Immunity Booster Smoothie
We thought this week would be the perfect time to send you a family favorite One Potato smoothie recipe and quick-link to shop the ingredients. For these smoothies, we encourage you to stock your freezer with organic berries so you and your family always have the ingredients for a healthy snack or breakfast on hand. Of course, feel free to use fresh berries as well!
For Single-Serving Smoothie:
3/4 Cup - Bananas
1/2 Cup - Mixed Berries IQF
Handful Spinach
1 Tablespoon - Almond Butter
1-2 Dried Dates (Pitted)
3 Tablespoons Hemp Seeds
3 Teaspoons Bee Pollen Granules DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE A BEE ALLERGY!
1 Tablespoon Turmeric Powder
Ground Black Pepper
Directions:
Combine all the ingredients in a blender.
Blend on High until smooth (add ice as desired).
Serve & Enjoy.
Substitutions and Dietary Considerations
Nut-Free: Substitute Sunflower Seed Butter for the Almond Butter (1:1) in this recipe. It has a similar texture and flavor!
Low or No Sugar: Bee pollen has only 2g of total sugar per 1 tsp serving, so this amount in your smoothie should not be a concern. But feel free to omit. Almond Butter has no added sugar, and we’ve included a Sunflower Butter option in your shopping cart that is also sugar-free.
BEE POLLEN is known as a superfood that can help improve the immune system (hence why we’ve included it in our immunity booster smoothie!) and it also provides a slight hint of sweetness. HOWEVER, bee pollen granules are produced by bees, and can cause a severe allergic reaction. We cannot stress this enough - DO NOT CONSUME IF YOU HAVE A KNOWN BEE ALLERGY, OR IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOU HAVE A BEE ALLERGY.
Getting Kids Involved
Let your kids pick their favorite berries - this recipe allows for flexibility.
While cutting the banana into small pieces is not necessary, letting your children use a plastic knife and count the slices is always good skill practice.
If little ones are measuring, it's always a good idea to do it into a bowl first and then have them pour the contents into the blender.
Pro Tips
If you want an extra frothy drink, use frozen berries and frozen bananas.
If your bananas are beginning to brown, you can always peel the banana, break into 4-6 pieces, and pop in a bag in the freezer to store and have on hand to use in smoothies anytime. Then it will be ready to toss into the blender and save you the need to use ice.
