Happy New Year, One Potato family! 🎉

Our last few bonus cooking and learning activities have been science and math focused: mixing, measuring, and STEM-ing our way through the kitchen. So for New Year’s, we’re turning the page—literally and figuratively—and trying something a little different: a food-powered geography and culture activity centered around lucky foods enjoyed around the world on New Year’s.

This one leans into writing, discussion, curiosity, and reflection, with just enough hands-on cooking to keep the kids excited. Whether you cook one of these dishes together or simply explore the food traditions as a family, this activity sparks conversation about heritage, global customs, and what “good luck” means to each of us as we head into a fresh year.

And because our mission at One Potato, as well as a core part of our Order Up! interview series, is about exploring new foods, flavors, and family traditions through the eyes of chefs, writers, and home cooks, this activity is a perfect companion. It gives your kids an easy, playful way to learn about the very cultures and ingredients we highlight each week, while building the family food curiosity that sits at the heart of our community.

It’s simple to set up, meaningful to do together, and a fun way to start the year with connection, culture, and good fortune on the table.

Happy New Year, from our One Potato Family to yours!
