At One Potato, we believe food is more than sustenance—it’s a way to connect with tradition, community, and family. That’s why we’re inspired by Ben Jacobs, co-founder of Tocabe, an Indigenous restaurant and marketplace rooted in honoring Native foods and traditions. In case you missed it, you can revisit our interview with Ben right here. Ben shared with us that many of the ingredients we enjoy daily—corn, beans, squash, wild rice—are staples of Indigenous cuisine. Ben and his team shared their recipe for Vegetarian Wild Rice Soup, and paired it with homemade cornbread made with Tocabe's Yellow Cornbread Mix to wrap up National Soup Month. Whether you’re cooking up this dish, or stocking up on pantry staples, we encourage you to support indigenous farmers and shop for these ingredients from the Tocabe Pantry. For every order Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace receives, they donate ingredients or ready-made meals to Native communities around the country:
Soups are a great way to practice taste-testing with your kids while keeping things simple and stress-free in the kitchen. Let them taste the soup and help decide if it needs more salt or pepper. They can also try it before choosing whether to add balsamic vinegar as a finishing touch! Even different types of salt can taste slightly different - try to discern the differences between the Cedar-Smoked Salt and standard Himalayan Sea Salt, for example, with your kids!
One Potato Kitchen Tools for this recipe: Large pot, large sauté pan, cutting board, chef knife, measuring cups, 9x13” baking pan
