One Potato's Diverse Community: All About Hispanic Heritage Month
Sharing Culture, Tradition, and Food.
As a twice-weekly newsletter, we share more than just favorite recipes: we’re a community of real parents, real people, having real conversations about feeding our families and raising healthy and happy kids. Our goal is to provide a newsletter that shares authentic stories relating to families and food that is made up of an incredibly diverse community from many different backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and identities. As part of that, we strive to recognize and bring about conversations relating to all the cultures and foods that make up our incredibly diverse background. This Sunday, we wanted to share more information about Hispanic Heritage Month; we can’t wait to bring you more interviews and personal stories from community members in the coming weeks. We’d love to hear from you!
The History of Hispanic Heritage Month: A Celebration of Culture, Tradition, and Food
Every year, from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. It’s a time to honor the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans, whose diverse backgrounds have significantly shaped our country. This month-long celebration offers a chance to reflect on the vibrant heritage and enduring impact of Latinx communities on the cultural and social fabric of the U.S.
Who Are We Celebrating?
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. It’s a time to reflect on the diverse cultures, languages, and histories that form the tapestry of Latinx identity. “Hispanic” is an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of people and traditions, underscoring the vast diversity within the community.
It’s also important to recognize that Hispanic Heritage Month goes beyond a singular identity. The term "Latinx" is often used to describe individuals from Latin American countries who don’t necessarily identify with Spain's European culture. This month serves as an opportunity to recognize the rich blend of indigenous, African, and European roots that define Latinx identity.
The Role of Food in Hispanic Heritage
While the month is full of history, music, and art, food holds a special place in these celebrations and is deeply woven into the fabric of Hispanic and Latinx cultures. From everyday meals to unique holiday dishes, food not only nourishes but also connects people to their roots, ancestors, and heritages.
You can revisit our One Potato version of Venezuelan Arepas, have some Vegetarian Pupasas that are a traditional street food from El Salvador, or whip up some Oven-Baked Chimichangas for a taste of Mexican flavors. Paid Subscribers can dive into our complete Sauce Library, for the full recipes to our homemade Salsa Verde and a Quick Curtido Slaw.
Here at One Potato, we also have recipes for our family favorite Latin BBQ Sauce and Mango Manchamantel Molé Sauce, featuring a trio of powdered dried chiles - not too spicy for sensitive younger palates, but a great way to introduce new flavors to your family. These sauces are hearty and flavorful, and can be stored for up to two weeks in the fridge, or kept in serving-size portions in the freezer to have on hand!
Traditions Rooted in Food
This month-long celebration often coincides with family gatherings and meals that emphasize traditional dishes. In many households, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and the preparation of food is an act of love and a way to pass down traditions. This is an aspect of food, family, and tradition that we know many cultures share!
During this month, you might notice schools, communities, and cultural institutions holding events that showcase traditional Hispanic and Latin American foods. Cooking demonstrations, tastings, and food festivals often take center stage as a way of introducing people to the flavors of the many countries represented. We encourage you to seek out a cooking class or demonstration, and you can find kids activities, in your local community to experience and practice Latinx cooking and flavors for yourself.
A Month of Celebration
Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a time to reflect on the past; it’s a celebration of living traditions that continue to thrive in the present. Today, Latinx food has made a lasting mark on the American culinary landscape. Dishes like tacos, empanadas, and arepas are now part of the mainstream food scene. As you enjoy the colors and rhythms of the season, don’t forget to savor the tastes that have helped shape this vibrant and enduring culture.
By sharing meals, recipes, and stories, we connect with the generations that came before us and celebrate the diverse heritage that continues to influence us all.
